What is Occupational Therapy?
This is a very big question with so many different answers, but in simplest terms occupational therapists help a person achieve all of the different ‘occupations' they have from birth to end of life care. Occupations can be a person’s job or career, but also all the roles and leisure activities that make up who they are! There are all sorts of reasons a person may have challenges that impede their ability to best perform in their occupations – injury, sudden illness, chronic illness, cognitive challenges, neurodivergence, motor challenges, or mental health challenges.
At Kid Power, pediatric occupational therapy is our specialty.
When it comes to pediatric occupational therapy, OTs focus on a kid’s occupation, which is being a kid! Kids need to play, move, explore, and learn so they can best access who they are meant to be in this world! OTs support kids in the NICU, hospitals, outpatient centers, schools, daycares, therapeutic day schools, mental health settings, in their homes, in their communities, and wherever else they need support. At Kid Power, we believe that kids are special and deserve all the opportunities to have fun and play in their world! We believe kids do the best they can when they can! Sometimes there are sensory processing, regulation, motor, and/or mental health challenges they are facing that make it difficult for them to do their best. Our therapists are passionate about building relationships to understand a kid’s strengths and interests. From there, we can create intentional and individualized interventions and treatment plans to help build them up and overcome things that may not be so easy for them. Kids need to be heard and seen for who they are, but still challenged to grow into exactly who they are meant to be!
